Cats and their sleeping behaviour

09.10.2018

Cats spend about two thirds of their day sleeping or napping. Young and older quadrupeds need even more sleep. Cats also have deep sleep phases, which are noticeable by muscle twitching and movement of the closed eyes and last only a few minutes. It is best not to wake your pet from a deep sleep phase. Otherwise, the sleep states are not very deep and last between 15 and 30 minutes.

Know the preferences

Every breed, but also every animal has different preferences and habits for the sleeping place. Many cats need a retreat to sleep, others prefer to be close to humans. Therefore, for example, a closed basket is not used by every cat. To avoid making a wrong buy, you should first study the sleeping habits of your pelt-nose and pay attention to their preferences. The pet shop offers a wide range of cat beds, baskets made of felt or rattan, fluffy dens, hammocks or projecting cushions.

The perfect place to sleep

The ideal sleeping place for a cat is sunny and warm. Placing your cat's basket by the window or by the heater increases the likelihood that it will be used and prevents your cat from preferring the warm computer as a sleeping place. There are also special sleeping places that can be attached to the heater to keep your cat nice and warm. Cats have several fixed places, but they also change frequently and try out new places to sleep.

If you don't want your cat to use your bed as a sleeping place, it helps to be consistent and not to get angry if your cat has used his own absence for a nap there. Cats are difficult to influence their choice of sleeping place. However, with the help of clicker training you can make certain places more palatable.
