Four basic rules for dog owners during hot weather

When summer shows its good side, the ice cream parlour around the corner quickly brings us refreshment. It is much more difficult for dogs to cool off. Four basic things you should therefore keep in mind on hot days: 

1. Enough water 

Your quadruped has only sweat glands between the bales and must therefore produce evaporation cold by panting. He does not suffer from salt loss, but has a much higher energy expenditure. He also needs a lot of saliva to keep the tongue moist. High air humidity also makes panting more difficult, as the mouth area becomes very dry. It is therefore important to carry water with you when you go for a walk and to constantly check your pet's fluid balance. 

2. Provide cooling options 

Perhaps your quadruped will enjoy a cold jump into the water. Even if there is no water nearby, an inflatable children's pool, a garden hose or a large bowl can be used for paddling fun. For longer walks, an old wet T-shirt can provide permanent cooling of the body. 

3. Avoid the hot car 

You should avoid long trips in a non-air-conditioned car and never leave your dog waiting in the car. Even during a short stopover, temperatures can quickly rise above 40 degrees in the car, even with the window open. When it is very hot, blood is transported to the extremities of quadrupeds for cooling. Important organs are thus undersupplied. If the body temperature rises to 43 degrees Celsius, the body's own protein coagulates, which can lead to unconsciousness and death. 

4. First aid bars 

If the precautionary measures should not be effective, first aid must be given immediately. To do this, place your dog in the shade and put him in a stable lateral position. In order not to overstrain your four-legged friend, it is important not to flood the whole body with water at once. With a wet cloth, starting with the paws, the whole body is slowly cooled. As soon as the circulation is stabilized, you must encourage your dog to drink. If he does not react, you should immediately consult the vet.
